The Apple TV 4K sends Dolby Atmos as a high bandwidth Dolby MAT stream rather than a compressed bitstream, and regular ARC cannot carry it. Your TV needs an HDMI eARC port and the soundbar needs eARC too, or Atmos quietly falls back to Dolby Digital 5.1. Every bar on this list except the Roku has eARC, and the Apple TV should plug into the TV unless the bar has its own HDMI input.
Single port bars like the Sonos Arc Ultra, Beam Gen 2, and Bose connect to the TV's eARC port and never see the video signal, so Dolby Vision passthrough is irrelevant. If your TV is short on HDMI ports, pick a bar with an input such as the Samsung, Sony, LG, or Vizio, and check it passes Dolby Vision at the frame rate you need. Sony and LG pass 4K120; Samsung and Vizio pass 4K60.
tvOS can switch the HDMI mode when content changes frame rate or dynamic range, and some bars resync a beat later than others. Sonos, Sony, and Bose stayed locked in our testing, while Samsung and Vizio needed a one time delay setting in the bar. Keep Match Content on, since it is better for picture, and set the bar's audio delay once.
The Apple TV controls soundbar volume through HDMI-CEC, which Samsung calls Anynet+ and LG calls SimpLink. Every bar here worked with the Siri Remote once CEC was on in the TV and bar, and the Apple TV can also learn the bar's infrared codes under Remotes and Devices if CEC misbehaves. The next Siri Remote is reported to change shape, but volume control is a tvOS function and should carry over.
Sonos, Bose, Sony, and LG include AirPlay 2, so iPhones and Macs can play to the bar directly and the Apple TV can target it as an AirPlay output. Samsung, Vizio, Polk, Yamaha, and Roku rely on Bluetooth for music from a phone. If Apple Music matters to you, treat AirPlay 2 as a must have. See /best/best-smart-speakers-2026 for standalone AirPlay speakers.
tvOS lets you set a HomePod or a stereo pair of HomePod minis as the Apple TV's default speakers, and the 128GB Apple TV 4K can even route the TV's other inputs to them over eARC. A HomePod pair plays Atmos and needs no HDMI cable at all, though you lose wired lip-sync precision and a subwoofer. The HomePod mini 2 expected on October 13 is reported to keep the same design, so a pair should work the same way.
